Rejected from the second contingent of nurses, Mary went to the Crimean War independently and established her own hospital from salvaged driftwood and iron sheets. Wearing bright colours, Mary entered warzones and didn’t limit her care to the treatment of wounded men, she was a comfort to everyone, giving soldiers a bed to rest in as well as food and drink.
