Florence Nightingale 12th May 1820- 13th August 1910

Starting her nursing career early, Florence realised that many of the deaths in the Crimean war could have been prevented with better sanitation and was the first to introduce practices such as hand washing. Refusing marriage so that she could dedicate herself entirely to the care of her patients, Florence worked all hours to bring a high standard of medical care to the country by training volunteers and validating nursing as an official career.
