2019 absolutely flew by! We can’t believe that not just a new year, but a new decade is upon us. With new beginnings ahead, will you be turning over any new leaves and making New Year’s resolutions?

Did you know, according to research, although around 60% of people admit that they try to make New Year’s resolutions, it's estimated that only around 8% of us manage to stick to them! Well, here we’ve listed a few simple ways you can hack the most commonly made New Year’s resolutions to make them achievable!

Exercise more

Pledging to exercise more is a common new year's resolution for many, but for nurses and doctors that spend their days walking miles around hospitals it can be difficult to find the motivation

One of the most common resolutions made is to exercise more – this is where so many of us fall into the trap of purchasing expensive gym memberships, hitting those treadmills for the first month or so of the year….then find our gym membership card gathering dust between the sofa cushions some month later…

What’s more, for those walking miles of corridors each day, finding the motivation to go and do an hour in the gym when you just want to catch up on some sleep can be difficult!

Well, why not try fitting in a super short home workout? There are some brilliant free apps out there, whether you want to blast a HIIT session or take things slower with some yoga.

Some useful free workout apps:

  • Couch to 5K – this brilliant NHS app will aim get you running in just nine weeks!
  • Asana Rebel – this yoga companion gives you two new workouts every day so you’ll never get stuck doing the same old routine.
  • Fitbod – for those into weight training, this app adapts to suit your training style and the equipment you have available
  • 7 Minute Workout – you can’t argue you don’t have time to exercise with this app! It features 72 exercises and 22 additional workouts that can be customized and modified to create more than 1,000 variations to help keep you motivated and moving.

Lose weight / Eat healthier

This one comes hand in hand with the exercise resolution, along with pledging to eat healthier. Once again, all very easy to make the promise, but changing habits can be difficult.

One easy way to help contribute to this goal (along with using your fitness apps) is to learn some new recipes that you can meal prep to take to work for your break! Try searching on Pinterest for some healthy and delicious recipes, and stock your fruit bowl up so you can easily grab a banana or a handful of grapes when you’re feeling peckish!

Get organised

As well as keeping a diary to plan out your shifts, why not start journalling in 2020? It can help to evoke mindfulness, relieve stress and expand emotional intelligence.

This can cover a multitude of areas, whether you want to declutter your surroundings or have clearer plans in place! For the former, why not give your place a spring clean and donate what you can to charity?

Perhaps you want to be more organised in terms of your to-dos? Why not treat yourself to a smart new diary to write your shifts in, or set up a Google Calendar to help you plan out your weeks.

Learn a new skill or hobby

Learning a new skill is a great way to feel fulfilled, and you can measure your progress with it throughout the year. Keen to try new things but don’t want to splash too much cash? Eventbrite is a great way to find free events throughout the UK, and features everything from book clubs and pottery classes, to dance classes and creative writing workshops.

There’s plenty of resources online to help you develop new hobbies too – if you want to get into photography, why not start by improving your mobile photography skills? No need to splash out on an expensive camera before you’re ready.

Quit smoking

This new year’s resolution helps you to save money AND keep yourself and the people around you healthy. The NHS has some free resources to help meet your goals of cutting down or quitting smoking, such as a Facebook support community and app.

Save money / Spend less money

Funnily enough, some of our previous resolutions can help with this one! Stopping smoking saves the average person around £128 each month. Plus, setting yourself the challenge to learn a new hobby could help to save money!

“I’ve promised myself 2020 is the year I’m going to improve my terrible cooking skills! I spend more money than I’d like to admit buying junk food to keep me going, so I’m going to be meal prepping to save some money and help myself to eat healthier” – Francesca, Marketing Manager

Fancy some extra cash in your pocket? Did you know we offer bonuses when you refer a friend to us? Whether you know someone looking for the occasional shift, or a long term contract, refer a friend to us and be in with a chance of earning up to £275 as a thank you!

Travel more

Lots of us would like to be able to travel more in 2020. By saving money through some of your resolutions, earning a bonus with our Refer A Friend scheme or by completing some locum shifts with us, why not plan a break for yourself this year? Why not treat yourself to a staycation, or find some new places to visit on day trips?
