The annual Macmillan Coffee Morning is not only the world’s biggest coffee morning, it is also Macmillan’s largest fund-raising event.
On 29 September, people all over the country will be taking part in an activity that's fun and also helps raise funds and awareness for a very worthy cause. The annual Macmillan Coffee Morning happens on that day and not only is it the world’s biggest coffee morning, it is also Macmillan’s largest fund-raising event.
Sadly, many people’s lives are affected by cancer because it impacts not only on the sufferers themselves but also on their families and friends. By taking part in the day, people who have benefited from the work Macmillan does often feel they are 'giving something back', while everyone else can simply enjoy great coffee and cake in the knowledge that they are helping to raise funds for such a worthwhile cause.
Since Douglas Macmillan used his £10 inheritance to found the Society for the Prevention and Relief of Cancer in 1911, the organisation has grown into a highly respected and efficient operation. Today Lynda Thomas and her leadership team are at the helm, and the Board of Trustees makes sure that everything Macmillan does is aimed at delivering the objectives of offering support to as many people as possible.
The first coffee morning took place in 1990 and was a small event based on the idea that guests would meet over a cup of coffee and donate the cost to Macmillan. The second year it was a national campaign, and total funds raised since are in excess of £165 million. Last year alone, £29.5 million was raised through the event.
People all over the UK host their own coffee mornings and the donations that are raised on the day are then made to Macmillan. Hosting your own coffee morning is easy because it can take place anywhere that you want it to, whether that is in the workplace, a community centre or even your own home.
Macmillan has developed a great reputation because of the great work it does. Medical, emotional, practical and financial support are all elements of the overall package of provisions that are available. Everyone knows that having a Coffee Morning is a chance to catch up with others over a cuppa and a slice of a delicious cake, so what could be better than doing it all to help such a great cause?
