The face of General Practice is changing rapidly and is increasingly under threat from private providers with Boots the Chemist, amongst many, now showing an interest in running in store surgeries. GP’s who wish to prosper, whether principals, salaried GP’s, freelance GP’s or those resting need to review their existing skills with the aim of increasing the range of skills that can be offered.
Reviews are similar to goals or targets and should be written down and then assessed annually and should include:
- Mandatory ‘must do’s’
- Self appraisal
- A full market assessment
- A business/ learning plan
Must Do’s
All GP’s should maintain there knowledge of the following (not exhaustive)
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation – annually
GMC guidance
Quality and outcome framework requirements – to identify and meet patient requirements.
Immunisation and screening schedules
Nice Guidance
Drugs and therapeutics
Department of Health Directives
Health and Safety issues – i.e. Avian Flu
Employment, Discrimination and disability Law
Self appraisal
This is an integral part of your own personal growth. Analyse what you are currently doing and think about what you could improve on.
- Practice needs (Maybe there will be no GP to do minor surgery next year).
- Get a special interest (in Dermatology for example)
- Look at your work life balance
- Rewrite your CV
- Practice based commissioning – Get better at it
More formal ways of appraising yourself include doing a learning needs analysis or a Myers- Briggs assessment.
Market assessment
This should include an appraisal of your time, money and effort you will need to invest in order to meet the requirements of the job. It should also include the timescales for any training, availability for local work. Retirement plans and support from colleagues and family. Opportunities to broaden your knowledge can include:
- Out-of-hours work
- Become a GP with a special interest.
- Insurance work
- GP care for the Prison service or Armed Forces
- Incapacity for work assessments
- Sessional work for the police
- Family planning
- GP appraiser
- QOF visits for the PCT
- Clinical trails
- Cosmetic surgery
- Aviation Medicine
- Sports Medicine
- Complementary Medicine
- Media work
- High altitude medicine including mountain rescue.
