Role Profile S.S.D.Assistant -
ROLE AND CONTEXT NEED TO DO
PURPOSE:
To assist in provision of sterile services to Theatres, Outpatients and Wards.
CONTEXT:
The London Independent Hospital is an 80 bedded acute care hospital situated in Stepney Green, East London. The Independent is part of BMI Health Care.
In addition to in-patient accommodation the hospital has full Out Patient Services, X-ray, MRI, Physiotherapy, Three Operating Theatres, Endoscopy Suite, I.T.U, C.C.U, S.S.D, Health Screening and Ancillary support.
The hospital has 24 hour resident medical cover and 24hr.Intensivist in residence.
DIMENSIONS:
- 3 Operating theatres, specialising in Cardiothoracic, Neuro, Opthalmics, Orthopaedics, Vascular, General, Gynae, G.U, ENT and Plastic Surgery.
- 1 Endoscopy Suite
- 3 Anaesthetic Rooms
- 1 Large Recovery room – consisting of 4 bays.
- S.S.D. Unit providing sterile services to Theatre.
- X-Ray
- Physio
- O.P.D.
- Wards
- Cath Lab.
RELATIONSHIPS:
Theatre Manager – responsible to
SSD Supervisor – reports to
Theatres & other staff – internal customers
Patients, visitors, consultants – external customers.
DECISION MAKING AUTHORITY:
Take charge of .S.S.D. Unit in absence of supervisor.
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS
- Satisfactory feedback from Theatre Staff,
Out-Patient Staff and Ward Staff. KEY OUTPUTS:
• To deliver at all times a high quality service,
To ensure welfare of patient is achieved.
• To be responsible for the ordering of
Packaging and cleaning materials, avoiding
Wastage.
• To accept designated responsibilities from
SSD Supervisor
• To be responsible for maintaining sterilisation records and informing Theatre Manager/Sister-in-Charge of any
problems.
• To implement Health Edge traceability system.
• To assist when the supervision and training of other members of staff working within the department.
• To remain updated on current SSD issues and good manufacturing practice.
• To ensure competence in the use of current relevant equipment./Devices in SSD
• To attend relevant courses to enable the effectiveness of the role.
• To be flexible and respond to fluctuating
workloads.
• To perform routine daily tasks including:
a. use of instrument washers
b. care of specialist instrumentation, i.e. drills etc.
c. checking of instrumentation against set tray lists.
d. Packaging and labelling supplementary instruments
e. Reporting faults and missing items to Sister-in-Charge, in accordance with local policies and procedures.
f. Ensure correct storage to protect integrity of packaging.
g. Maintain high standards of cleanliness within the department.

and COSHH
NEED TO KNOW NEED TO BE
QUALIFICATIONS:
• None necessary
• Good basic education
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
• Preferred knowledge of S.S.D. practices.
EXPERIENCE
• Previous experience in S.S.D. .
