Senior Theatre Sister –

ROLE AND CONTEXT NEED TO DO
PURPOSE:
To work in liaison with Theatre Manager to provide high standards of nursing care in all areas within the Theatre Suite.
Deputise for Theatre Manager in his/her absence.
CONTEXT:
The London Independent Hospital is an 80 bedded acute care hospital In addition to in-patient accommodation the hospital has full Out Patient Services, X-ray, MRI, Physiotherapy, Three Operating Theatres, Endoscopy Suite, I.T.U, C.C.U, C.S.S.D, Health Screening and Ancillary support.
The hospital has 24 hour resident medical cover.
DIMENSIONS:
- 3 Operating theatres, specialising in Cardiothoracic, Neuro, Opthalmics, Orthopaedics, Vascular, General, Gynae, G.U, ENT and Plastic Surgery.
- 1 Endoscopy Suite
- 3 Anaesthetic Rooms
- 1 Large Recovery room – consisting of 4 bays.
- C.S.S.D. Unit providing sterile services to Theatre.
- X-Ray
- Physio
- O.P.D.
- Wards
- Cath Lab.
RELATIONSHIPS:
Theatre Manager – reports to
Theatre Staff – internal customers
Other Staff – internal customers, Patients, Visitors, Consultants – external customers.
DECISION MAKING AUTHORITY:
Without ref – Manage operating lists
Delegation of staff
With ref: Manager Theatre and staff in Theatre Manager’s absence. KEY OUTPUTS:
To deliver at all times high standards of nursing care and to act as a point of reference for junior staff.
To assist in development and maintenance of clinical standards and participate in clinical audits.
To accept delegated responsibilities from Theatre Manager in his/her absence and at other times as required.
To maintain professional creditbility and attend relevant courses to assist in enabling the effectiveness of the role.
Ensure accurate records of patients care and progress maintained.
To ensure compliance of all local/corporate policies and procedures.
To ensure competence in use of current relevant, surgical, recovery and Endoscopy equipment.
To participate in the daily running of Endoscopy Unit in absences of Manager.
To assist with all Endoscopy procedures.
To establish and promote sound communication channels between staff, patients and visitors.
To develop and maintain harmonious working relationships within the department, hospital and outside agencies.
To take part in interviewing and selection of junior staff and be actively involved in their orientation and development.
To work effectively with the medical staff.
Participate in on-call rotas
Participate in staff appraisals
To continually review nursing workload and utilise all resources to deliver quality care.
To act at all times in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.
