General Practitioner UK

General practitioners are the medical doctors that provide primary care to patients suffering from acute, chronic illnesses and minor injury etc. The doctor administers preventive care and provides health education to both sexes and all age groups.

General Practitioners in the UK are the first point of contact for the patient when they require medical attention. They provide complete care in the local community dealing with all sorts of problems such as social, psychological and problems of the physical nature. These doctors access the problem or the medical condition and decide on the best course of action. GP’s in the UK provide general treatment as well as preventative treatment.

A General Practitioner is also involved in hospital work and mentr doctors who are training to be general practitioners. In the UK, most of the General Practitioners work for the Primary Care Trusts (PCTs). These PCTs are primary care providers that include General Practitioner and other medical professionals like Opticians, Pharmacist etc.

General Practitioners in the UK need to complete the MBChB (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) a four-year training course after an undergraduate course of 5-6 years at the medical school. The doctor has to serve for one year as a PRHO (Pre Registration House Officer), two years as SHO (senior house officer) and one year as general practice registrar. To get permission to practice as an independent General Practitioner you need to pass an examination after you complete their registrar year. The assessment includes a two-hour video of consultations with their patients and the audit cycle (completed during the doctor’s Registrar year). Additionally the doctors have to take a Multiple Choice Questionnaire and along with a standardized assessment of competencies by their respective trainer.
